“Whenever, Wherever” is a line from “Send for Me” on The National’s album First Two Pages of Frankenstein, but it also sums up my attitude when it comes to my ongoing documentation of the band.
This special edition zine has mostly unseen and unpublished photographs from the past five years. It starts with a throwback to the first Homecoming in Cincinnati in 2018, with glimpses of the band’s rehearsal in Kentucky, followed by some of their first gigs after a break due to the pandemic. The last section features a selection of images from 2022 through to The National’s epic night at Madison Square Garden in New York City with Patti Smith on August 18, 2023.
I hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed taking them. A big thank you to The National, their management and crew, all the fans, and Wally Krantz for help selecting the images and the zine design.
